The Ohio State University launches Hit the Road with the Buckeyes program.

09.25.2008 | Columbus, OH | The Ohio State University was looking for a way to get faculty and staff involved in an event to raise awareness of their “Your Plan for Health” program that encourages employees to be proactive about better health and increase their physical activity.

To achieve their goal, Minds On created a campaign called “Hit the Road with the Buckeyes.” The challenge was to promote the idea of creating teams to walk as many miles as the Buckeyes travel for their away games during football season.

“We created a kit that made it simple to implement the program and for each participating team to track their progress,” said Tom Augustine, president of Minds On, Inc. “We wanted to make it fun and a little friendly competition the staff could be excited about, and what better time than football season.”

The kit included a folder that gave an overview of the program, instructions on participation and an explanation of the various prize levels. It was designed to look like a football and sported a distinctive “Hit the Road with the Buckeyes” logo design. The kit contained individual cards including team captain responsibilities, prize information, a map of campus walking trails and a progress tracking brochure that listed all the away games with a place for team members to mark their progress with Buckeye stickers. The kit also contained a physical activity conversion chart that helped participants convert other activities such as bicycling, housework, swimming and more into miles.

Response to the campaign was overwhelming and OSU had to increase the print run because they received double their projected response.

“We’re very pleased that we could help OSU generate such enthusiasm,” said Augustine. “Getting people involved was a good thing. Getting them moving toward better health was even better.”
